In the men's and women's 50 free all the big names eased through to semis in the qualifying.
Many of the swimmers were recovering from the finals the night before, with prelims this morning seeing the first swimmer from India go through, with Alava, IND, putting up a 2:29.03 to qualify 16th in her first semi final.
Women's 50m Breast
The women's 50m breaststroke started off with some quick heats, with Petra Chocova, CZE, knocking on the door of Jessica Hardy's, USA, world record of 29.80 with a fast 30.67 prelim time qualifying in first place for the semis. Chocova's final touch wasn't the greatest. It will be interesting to see what she does tonight. In second was Julia Efimova, RUS, stopping the clock with a 31.10, and Mariia Liver, UKR, put up a 31.47 on the large scoreboard. Laura Sogar, USA, 32.07 and Emily McClellan, USA, 32.43 qualified moving into the next round. Ana Carla Carvalho, BRA, 32.34 and Caroline Reitshammaer, AUT, 32.55 also moved on.
Men's 50m Free
In the WUGs premier event, the men's 50 free, Andrey Grechin, RUS, posted the fastest qualifying time of 22.26. Next was team mate Vladdy Morozov, RUS, 22.31 followed by Derek Tomey, USA, 22.43. Australia sprint star Andrew Abood, AUS, was fourth in 22.47. Also making the semis was Adam Small, USA, 22.79, Geoffry Cheah, HKG, 22.76 and Yahav Shaaf, ISR, 23.01. That's right. Its Hong Kong again.
Women's 200m Fly
Stretching it out for the 200 fly, Katerine Savard, CAN, qualified first in 2:11.38 leaving plenty in the tank for this evenings semi finals. In second was Kona Fujita, JPN, 2:11.72 followed by Yana Martynova, RUS, 2:12.59. Kelsey Floyd, USA, qualified at 2:16.37 and Tijana Vukanovic, SRB, is in for her first semi at 2:21.06.
India had their first qualifier for a semi final with Pooja Alava, IND, putting up a 2:29.03 for 16th place. Its had to believe that with a population over 1.2B people that India has faired so poorly over the years in the Olympic events and competitions.
Women's 50m Free
In the other premier event, the women's 50 free, Anna Santamans, FRA, touched the wall first at 25.00 flat. Qualifying next in second was Megan Romano, USA, 25.20 and Aliaksandra Herasimenia, BLR, was third with a 25.22. Elizateveta Bazarova, RUS hit the wall qualifying in fourth place with a 25.44. Liv Jensen, USA, cruised in touching at 25.82 for 14th place.
Men's 4x200m Free Relay
Team Russia qualified first this morning (7:14.74) with Artem Lobuzov, RUS, leading off with the fastest 200 time of the morning putting up a 1:47.84. Team mate Stephan Surkov, RUS, anchored in the second fastest split of 1:48.91 and the third fastest went to his team mate Evegney Lagunov, RUS, 1:48.99.
Team USA qualified second 7:19.92, with no one under 1:49. Flach, Wold, Ritter, and Barber went to the office, did the work and went home qualified, preferring Lane 5 for the finals.
Japan qualified third 7:20.99 with Hiromasa Fujimori posting the fastest split of 1:49.76. France 7:21.29, Canada 7:25.59, Australia 7:26.06, Italy 7:28.58 and Romania 7:45.35 rounded out the final eight.
Evening Finals
Evening finals resume at 1900 hours (7:00pm) local time +4:00 hours GMT / MSK (Moscow Central Time).
