Sam Rockwell in a wet tank, and Darren Criss beds Wigg
The Way Way Back
Directors: Nat Faxon, Jim Rash
Writers: Nat Faxon, Jim Rash
Stars: Steve Carell, Toni Collette, Allison Janney
A super sulky pubescent (Liam James) is stuck with his mom and her bf (Toni Collette & Steve Carell in a non-comic role) at a summer beach house. He finds fun and friendship at a local water park. The plot?s familiar, so it?s up to the storytelling and characters to make it special. Sam Rockwell and Allison Janney create enjoyable people, but the rest of the people aren?t especially interesting. It?s predictable and things take too long to happen. Except for Sam Rockwell (as the mentor), things aren?t that funny or heartfelt when they do.

Girl Most Likely
Directors: Shari Springer Berman, Robert Pulcini
Writer: Michelle Morgan (screenplay)
Stars: Kristen Wiig, Annette Bening, Matt Dillon
You might have high expectations for this film, since Kristen Wiig is the star. But if you think of her as just another actor, you?ll end up being pleasantly entertained. She underplays her usual oddball as a New Yorker struggling with her career, boyfriend and life in general. After an unfortunate incident she ends up back at home in NJ with her mother (Annette Bening is a delightful turn). The film tries too hard to be one of those quirky character charmers, but it sometimes succeeds, although predictably. It?s not hilarious, but sweetly amusing.
