PlayStation 4 Leads The Way In Video Game Console Energy Efficiency

Anticipation mounts as the next generation of video game systems are starting to hit the market, promising more realistic graphics, better sound and a more movie-like experience.

Last year, Nintendo released the Wii U, the successor to the Wii. This fall, Sony will release the PlayStation 4, while Microsoft enters the ring with Xbox One.

But with all those shiny new gaming consoles comes a question: Which system is the most energy-efficient system on the market and waste the least amount of energy.

The good people at Enervee?have provided the answer:

With the tests being completed and the numbers crunched, its Sony who comes out the winner.?The PlayStation 4 out of a scale from 0 to 100 (100 being the top mark) received an efficiency score of 100.?Xbox One, was second at 96,?Ouya???an Android operating system micro console ? was third with a score of 78, while the?Nintendo Wii U has a ranking of 67, even below next generation systems.

Older systems??rank even lower on the energy efficiency scale: PlayStation 3 Slim 500GB has a rating of 69; the Wii finishes with 65; Xbox 360 at 63 out of 100; and last on the scale was the PlayStation 3 Slim 320 GB at 62.

While Enervee does give a very through list of environmental performance for electronics, its not the only website out their if you are looking for the greenest video game system or electronics.?Greenpeace every fall publishes their??Guide to Greener Electronics??which provides a comprehensive ranking of the best in eco-friendly gadgets.

Are video games the energy wasting vulture that many within the environmental community complain about? Or as the new generation of systems come out, starting to turn face??What do you people think?

Bob Hope's legacy as entertainer of U.S. troops celebrated at National World War II Museum

NEW ORLEANS (AP) ? Bob Hope, who grew up in Cleveland and call it his hometown, entertained 11 presidents at the White House, hosted the Academy Awards 19 times and told thousands of jokes to some 10 million U.S. troops over the course of four wars.

Now the long life and legacy of the beloved actor and comedian, who died 10 years ago at age 100, is being celebrated at the National World War II Museum in New Orleans, where the World Golf Hall of Fame & Museum has brought the "Bob Hope: An American Treasure" traveling exhibition.

More than 160 mementos from Hope's life capture his passion for golf, relationships with presidents, pride in his country and appreciation for military service. The exhibit officially opens to the public Saturday, though a soft opening will be held Friday during regular museum hours.

The exhibit includes vintage photographs of Hope entertaining troops at USO shows overseas, an honorary Oscar statuette and PGA of America money clip. But the highlight is Hope's jokes, which are printed on displays and included in video clips throughout the exhibit.

"It was important to make it funny," said Jack Peter, senior vice president of the World Golf Hall of Fame and Museum, who was in New Orleans for the opening. "That was one of the requests of the family."

And funny it is.

"I left England when I found out I couldn't be king" is the Hope quote in the section of the exhibit about his immigration to America from England as a young boy.

"He was very proud to be an American immigrant, that he was able to come here and succeed, and he wanted to give something back," said Anthony "Tony" Montalto, Hope's longtime accountant, who over the decades became a good friend and remains a trustee of Hope's estate.

There are pictures and jokes of Hope's time spent playing golf with presidents Dwight Eisenhower, Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan, Richard Nixon and others.

"He's played golf with more presidents than just about anybody," Peter said.

The exhibit also includes a plaque of Hope's induction into the U.S. Blind Golf Association Hall of Fame and his name tag proclaiming him an "active member."

"When I miss a shot, I just think what a beautiful day it is ... then I take a deep breath. I have to do that. That's what gives me the strength to break the club," Hope is quoted as saying.

Jokes aside, the exhibit also captures Hope's appreciation for military service. There are pictures of him shaking hands with injured troops, some who had lost limbs but had smiles on their faces. There are pictures and video of Hope entertaining on stage during World War II, Vietnam and other wars.

"This brings another aspect of the war that we're not always able to tell through our permanent exhibits," said Toni Kiser, the National WWII Museum's curator who put the exhibit together. "It was really important to the troops to get rest and relaxation, and not only did they love to be entertained with music and comedy, it was necessary for them to have that down time, to not be in fight mode the entire time."

Hope, it seemed, knew that.

"I have seen what a laugh can do," he is quoted as saying, in the exhibit space with pictures of him with wounded troops. "It can transform almost unbearable tears into something bearable, even hopeful."

The exhibit will remain on display in New Orleans through Oct. 31.

Oil drilling begins despite anti-fracking protests

Cuadrilla exploratory oil drilling in West Sussex begins despite nine days consecutive protests at site

Energy company Cuadrilla has started exploratory oil drilling in West Sussex despite anti-fracking protests entering a ninth day.

The project has been subject to days of delays due to the high-profile protests aimed at preventing the delivery of trucks and equipment to the plant.

A Cuadrilla spokesman said: "We started test drilling at 11.15am, and we will do a 3,000ft vertical well. We will be there for two to three months."

Campaigners fear the project at Lower Stumble, near Balcombe, West Sussex, could lead Cuadrilla to go on to conduct hydraulic fracturing.

The controversial method of ?fracking? involves high pressure liquid being pumped deep underground to split shale rock and release gas supplies.

Opponents of fracking have highlighted concerns about potential water contamination and environmental damage, as well as small-scale earthquakes.

Police have had to throw up a daily security operation around the test site's entrance with more than 30 people arrested since last Friday, mainly on suspicion of obstructing deliveries, including Natalie Hynde, 30, the daughter of the Kinks' Ray Davies and the Pretenders' Chrissie Hynde.

Natalie Hynde's boyfriend, veteran eco campaigner Simon "Sitting Bull" Medhurst, 55, was also held after the pair superglued their hands together around the gate for around two hours.

This week Cuadrilla's chief executive, Francis Egan, reacted to concerns surrounding the drilling by saying his firm has "no intention of ruining the countryside and won't ruin the countryside".

Mr Egan insisted fracking was safe and would not pose a threat to the public or people's drinking water.

He said "significant" amounts of oil and gas could be made available through fracking in the UK, but acknowledged his firm's activities had been delayed as a result of protests against its exploratory drilling activities in West Sussex.

BBC Sport app comes to Kindle Fire, now lets you filter out Chelsea news

iOS users already had access to the BBC Sport app's customizable "quick links" feature, which provides more direct access to favorite sports, but an update has just taken the idea a bit further. Quick links now work across Android and the freshly-minted Kindle Fire version too, and they additionally allow you to filter news according to which football club(s) you want to follow and which bits of multi-million-pound transfer gossip you'd rather just ignore. Other, more general improvements include refreshed indexes for a total of 41 different sports and greater prominence given to major tournaments like Formula 1 and the Ashes. If you want to check out the app on a Kindle Fire or Fire HD, you'll need to be in the UK -- an international version is still in the works and will be "available soon." There's a hat-trick of relevant download links below.

IBIS Can Do What the Da Vinci Does (But for 90 Percent Less)

If Playing God taught us anything, it's that surgeons with shaky hands and crippling prescription painkiller addictions are not long for their profession. That's why robots like the Da Vinci have assumed the lead in delicate laparoscopic procedures. But their electronic joints' sharp movements can be just as damaging to a patient's innards in the hands of an inexperienced surgeon. And at $2 million a pop, the Da Vinci is only available at a select number of hospitals. But a newly unveiled competitor developed at Tokyo Tech aims to beat the Da Vinci at its own game, at a tenth of its price.

Kiks Add Stickers and Third-Party Games - The Next Web

Kik, the messaging service with more than 50 million registered users, has been vocal with its plans to introduce third-party games and content at some point, and now the moment has come after the?Canada-headquartered startup quietly updated its iOS?and Android apps to add stickers and its first third-party game (from Zynga).

Rich-emoticon-like stickers are fast becoming a global craze,?having netted Japanese app Line?$17 million in revenue?earlier this year, while Path has seen financial gains from stickers too. Social gaming platforms ? which hook titles in to messaging apps to allow for multi-player games and social sharing ? are also generating money, and Line?s own gaming service is a major reason it is tipped to make $85 million in revenue during Q2 2013.

It isn?t just Line that is making money. Korea?s Kakao Talk grossed $311 million from games alone in the first half of 2013. These successes led Tango to become the first US-based messenger to introduce games in June, although Kik?s games platform is more open than to the others? because it is HTLM5-based.

Zygna, while a company in turmoil, remains a huge name in the mobile gaming space, and this is the first time that it has created a game for a mobile messaging platform, Kik confirms.

Kik has provided its own games?for some time, and titles from TreSensa, a one-year old company that specializes in HTML5 (cross-platform) games and recently raised a $1 million angel funding round, will come soon, according to the app update.

The Zynga game is ?One Word?, in which users solve word puzzles based on images. Scores and challenges can be shared with friends on Kik. It isn?t a blockbuster like other Zynga games, but it is an interesting partnership and the exclusivity hints at more releases in the future.

game kik 730x539 Kik introduces stickers and third party games, starting with Zyngas first title for a messaging app

Kik?s sticker shop is somewhat hidden and can be accessed within the emoticon section of a chat window.

Currently the service offers three sticker packs, one for free and two others priced at ?1.49 (it appears to be $1.99, but we can?t confirm US pricing just yet.) The sets include South Park, which look like another exclusive for Kik.

stickers kik 730x539 Kik introduces stickers and third party games, starting with Zyngas first title for a messaging app

Landing a Zynga exclusive is certainly a very interesting development. Zynga has made (and arguably lost, to a point) its fortune on social gaming, so its decision to explore messaging apps is a sizable validation for the industry as a content platform, and obviously also Kik as a service.

The startup made a move towards games and content when it launched its HTML5 ?Cards? platform last November, allowing users to pull up YouTube videos, sketch, search images and more from inside the app. Speaking at the time,?Livingston admitted the move was a first step towards finally monetizing the service.

Kik isn?t providing comment on its new app update ? although it has confirmed some aspects of the new features to us ? but Livingston has made it very clear that gaming is a part of Kik?s future in the past. During an interview with TNW back in April,?he said:

The success of Kakao Talk and our own game shows the potential. Every games company in the world has reached out to us, and we?re working with a number of gaming companies to build a mobile-only platform.

April saw the company net $19.5 million in fresh funding to power its move into content, and we shall see how this is used to further today?s developments.

With stickers and gaming primarily finding adoption and drawing revenue in Asia to date, it will be interesting to see how Kik?s user base ? which is predominantly in North America and Europe ? will receive the new features.

Facebook added free stickers to its service this year, and it just launched a new program that sees it work closely with game makers on mobile.

SEC sues ex-Santander executive, ex-Spanish judge for insider trading

By Jonathan Stempel

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission has charged a former Banco Santander SA executive and a former Spanish judge with insider trading over a proposed takeover of Potash Corp of Saskatchewan Inc on which the Spanish bank had given investment banking advice.

In a lawsuit filed on Tuesday in U.S. District Court in New York, the SEC is seeking to recover nearly $1 million of alleged illegal profit by Cedric Ca?as Maillard, a former adviser to Banco Santander's chief executive, and Julio Mar?n Ugedo, the former judge.

According to the SEC, Ca?as, 40, had learned on August 5, 2010, that Santander was helping Anglo-Australian mining giant BHP Billiton Ltd prepare a bid for Potash, a fertilizer company based in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.

The SEC said that Ca?as, a Harvard Business School graduate, then tipped the acquisition to Mar?n, 42, a close friend with whom he had grown up and still talked to by phone, text message or email dozens of times a month.

According to the SEC, Ca?as soon bought the equivalent of 30,000 Potash shares through contracts-for-difference (CFD), which are leveraged securities not traded in the United States, and Mar?n bought 1,393 Potash shares. It said Mar?n has admitted to discussing Potash with Ca?as before making that purchase.

On August 17, 2010, Potash rejected an unsolicited $38.6 billion takeover from BHP Billiton, but the news caused Potash's share price to shoot up more than 25 percent that day.

The SEC said Ca?as and Mar?n quickly sold their securities, realizing respective net profits of $917,239 and $43,566. It seeks to recover those sums and impose civil fines.

"Ca?as used his position as an insider at an investment bank to trade CFDs based on confidential information," Daniel Hawke, chief of the SEC's market abuse unit, said. "To those who think they can mask their insider trading by trading CFDs rather than the underlying equity security, this case demonstrates our resolve to detect such trading and hold them accountable."

The SEC said Ca?as left his job at Santander in 2011 and now lives in Madrid, while Mar?n lives in Badajoz, Spain.

It is unclear whether the defendants have hired lawyers. Neither could immediately be reached for comment. Santander spokeswoman Julia Hayley declined to comment.

In April 2011, the SEC said former Santander analyst Juan Jose Fernandez Garcia agreed to pay more than $626,000 in disgorged profit and fines to settle insider trading charges relating to Potash. He did not admit or deny wrongdoing.

Canada ultimately blocked the Potash takeover on the ground that it did not provide a "net benefit" to the country.

The case is SEC v. Ca?as Maillard et al, U.S. District Court, Southern District of New York, No. 13-05299.

Estimate of French diamond heist balloons to $136 million

PARIS (AP) ? Wearing a scarf to mask his face, the gunman held up at least three security guards and then fled the luxury Cannes hotel roughly a minute later with $136 million in diamond jewelry, more than twice the initial estimated worth of the loot.

The simple, speedy theft is the biggest jewelry heist in years. Police had previously said Sunday's theft at the Carlton Intercontinental Hotel had netted ?40 million ($53 million) worth of treasure ? even at that level a major haul. Reached by The Associated Press, Philippe Vique, an assistant prosecutor in the Riviera town of Grasse, said the Dubai-based organizer of the diamond show had since raised the value based on a more complete inventory.

Vieques described a canny, but quick and logistically simple, break-in. The suspect somehow got in through the hotel's locked French doors, which open onto Cannes' famed Croisette promenade, then held up the participants of the show with a handgun and fled on foot. The hold-up itself took about a minute, all with three private security guards, two vendors and a manager of the sale-exhibit on hand, he said.

No customers were present at the time.

"He took a bag containing a briefcase and a small box, and then fled by another French door on the inside," Vique said. "He left on foot ... it was very fast."

The bag contained rings, earrings and pendants, Vique said. As the suspect began his getaway, a few jewels spilled out of the bag of loot and were quickly recovered.

"I wouldn't say it was easily done ? opening a locked door..." Vique said. "He found a way to open it. Why was he able to open this door?"

The jewelry was part of a display centering on the prestigious Leviev diamond house, which is owned by Israeli billionaire Lev Leviev. It was to run until the end of August.

A Leviev spokesman declined to comment. A day earlier, the company issued a statement saying its officials were cooperating with authorities and were relieved that no one was injured in the robbery.

The hotel, in a statement, confirmed the robbery and said none of its employees or guests "were involved in or affected by the incident." The Carlton said it was cooperating with police and would not comment further on the criminal investigation.

Jonathan Sazonoff, U.S. editor for the Museum Security Network website and an authority on high-value crime, told the AP on Sunday that police were likely to probe whether the heist was linked to recent jail escapes by alleged members of the Pink Panther jewel thief gang.

Vique said authorities were pursuing all possible leads and reviewing surveillance video footage, notably from cameras put in place by Cannes municipal authorities. But he said there was no indication so far that the suspect had links to any organized crime group.

The luxury hotel featured prominently in Alfred Hitchcock's "To Catch a Thief," starring Cary Grant as a reformed burglar chasing a jewel thief. Beyond the fiction, the Carlton has already been hit by a jewelry theft: In 1994, machine-gun-toting thieves stole $45 million in gems from the hotel ? an ornate, opulent fixture of the city's most-renowned boulevard. Stars throng the hotel each year for the Cannes Film Festival, and tourists rich and middle-class alike are common.

Plant-based compound may inhibit HIV

A compound found in soybeans may become an effective HIV treatment without the drug resistance issues faced by current therapies, according to new research by George Mason University researchers.

It's in the early stages, but genistein, derived from soybeans and other plants, shows promise in inhibiting the HIV infection, says Yuntao Wu, a professor with the George Mason-based National Center for Biodefense and Infectious Diseases and the Department of Molecular and Microbiology.

Still, that doesn't mean people should begin eating large amounts of soy products. "Although genistein is rich in several plants such as soybeans, it is still uncertain whether the amount of genistein we consume from eating soy is sufficient to inhibit HIV," Wu says.

Genistein is a "tyrosine kinase inhibitor" that works by blocking the communication from a cell's surface sensors to its interior. Found on a cell's surface, these sensors tell the cell about its environment and also communicate with other cells. HIV uses some of these surface sensors to trick the cell to send signals inside. These signals change cell structure so that the virus can get inside and spread infection.

But genistein blocks the signal and stops HIV from finding a way inside the cell. It takes a different approach than the standard antiretroviral drug used to inhibit HIV.

"Instead of directly acting on the virus, genistein interferes with the cellular processes that are necessary for the virus to infect cells," Wu says. "Thus, it makes the virus more difficult to become resistant to the drug. Our study is currently it its early stage. If clinically proven effective, genistein may be used as a complement treatment for HIV infection."

Wu sees possibilities in this plant-based approach, which may address drug toxicity issues as well. Because genistein is plant-derived, it may be able to sidestep drug toxicity, a common byproduct of the daily and lifelong pharmaceutical regimen faced by patients with HIV to keep the disease at bay, Wu says. Typically, patients take a combination of multiple drugs to inhibit the virus. The frequency can lead to drug toxicity. Plus, HIV mutates and becomes drug-resistant.

Wu and his team are working at finding out how much genistein is needed to inhibit HIV. It's possible that plants may not have high enough levels, so drugs would need to be developed, Wu says.

Wu's research is feeling the financial squeeze these days due to sequestration and budget cuts within the National Institutes of Health, he says. His lab has turned to novel ways to fund the HIV research, including the genistein project. George Mason University research

A bicycle ride dubbed NYC DC AIDS Research Ride raised money for Wu's lab a few years ago and has stepped up its efforts with a new fundraiser.

MakerPlane's open source aircraft funding campaign gets off to a slow start (video)

There are some things in this world we're not sure are improved by the 3D printing process, like firearms and food. Aircraft might also be on that list, but no amount of dubiousness will stand in the way of MakerPlane's open source plane. The aviation company's ambitious Indiegogo campaign went live last week (check out the video below), but its quest for funding looks like it's going to be a major uphill climb. At the time of this writing, the campaign had yet to breach the $800 mark, a far cry from its $75,000 goal. While part of the reason for the slow funding can be chalked up to a certain level of skepticism when it comes to a plane made with 3D printed parts and open sourced avionics software, the lack of plane-related rewards might also be holding the company back from reaching its endgame. For example, a $10,000 pledge will only get your corporate logo on the display craft's fuselage. That being said, somebody's got to dream big. Just don't ask us to get in your homemade plane.

Golf-'Oh baby',Canadian Open wide open after Mahan withdrawal

OAKVILLE, Ontario, July 27 | Sun Jul 28, 2013 12:25am BST

OAKVILLE, Ontario, July 27 (Reuters) - Brandt Snedeker will take a one shot cushion into the final round of the Canadian Open after leader Hunter Mahan walked away from a potential $1 million payday on Saturday to be home for the birth of his child.

A wild day of rain delays, spectacular charges and a dazzling nine-under 63 from Snedeker at Glen Abbey Golf Course were all overshadowed by Mahan's hurried exit that threw the tournament wide open.

Mahan, a five-time winner on the PGA Tour, had held a two shot overnight lead but while warming up on the driving range received word that his wife Kandi had gone into labor.

One of the hottest players on PGA Tour after having played in the final group at both last week's British Open and before that the U.S. Open, Mahan did not hesitate to give up his shot at the $1 million winner's purse, rushing back to Dallas for the birth of his first child.

"On the seventh tee I looked up and I didn't see Hunter's name on the leaderboard and I looked at my caddie, and go, 'What's going on'," Snedeker told reporters. "He goes, 'I think Hunter had to leave because Kandi went into labor.'

"Hunter was going to be hard to catch because he was playing so good.

"With him leaving now, the tournament is wide open and I knew I had a chance if I could keep the momentum going after the first six holes to really ride it out and do something special today."

With Mahan's name off the leaderboard the scramble was on as golfers took advantage of the soft conditions to attack the Jack Nicklaus designed layout.

Snedeker, who began the day a massive eight shots back of Mahan, surged to the top behind an error free display that was just one birdie shy of equaling the Glen Abbey course record of 62.

Lurking one shot back is David Lingmerth, who eagled the par five 18th, to cap off a round of seven-under 65 and put the Swede in contention for a maiden PGA Tour title on 13-under 203.

Matt Kuchar, the highest ranked player in the field at number six, fired a bogey-free eight-under 64 will start Sunday's final round just two back alongside Jason Bohn, who had a 66.

"I think Hunter right now is playing some of the best golf of anybody in the world," said Kuchar. "To be in the final group of the U.S. Open, final group of the British Open, come here playing just great golf, you knew he was just going to continue to play good golf.

"Not having him in the field kind of bunches the rest of us up and I think kind of gave everybody a chance."

With thunder storms in the area warning horns sounded at exactly noon with spectators and players ordered to evacuate the course.

Before the 80-minute delay several of the early starters, including a trio of former Masters champions Fijian Vijay Singh (2000) and South Africans Charl Schwartzel (2011) and Trevor Immelman (2008) had already mounted charges.

Singh, winner of the 2004 Canadian Open in a playoff over local favourite Mike Weir, got an overcast day off to a bright start going birdie-eagle-birdie to jump up the leaderboard.

The big Fijian would add four more birdies before his round unraveled with a double-bogey at the 15th just prior to the delay followed by a bogey at the 16th right after play resumed but still finished with a 66 to sit just six off the pace.

Immelman also had a 66 but will start five back of the leader while Schwartzel (66) has the most work to do seven shots behind the leader. (Editing by Gene Cherry)
