Dick Cheney recalls knowing his heart was 'at an end'

With a new heart, Dick Cheney is back.

In an exclusive interview with ABC News' Jonathan Karl, Cheney reflects on the "miracle" that a heart transplant promises to give him years of added life. And Cheney shows he is as confrontational as ever, taking on President Obama - and even Sarah Palin.

Cheney, 71, details how far back he has come. He remembers waking from weeks of heavy sedation after having a pump installed in his heart in 2010, a grueling operation that left him seeing his own mortality in the mirror.

"Two years ago this time I was on a respirator, heavily sedated. Just had a pump? installed on my heart because my heart had gotten so weak after six heart attacks and 30-some years of heart disease that it was, you know, it was at the end," he said.

"I lost 40 pounds. I was heavily sedated in the intensive care unit for weeks afterwards. I had pneumonia while I was in recovering from the surgery. And by the time I came out from under I looked in a mirror and what I saw was my dad shortly before he died. He was in his 80s," Cheney said.

That is why Cheney, in his first interview since his heart transplant four months ago, calls his recovery "nothing short of a miracle."

"I haven't felt this good in years," he said.

He doesn't know who gave him his new heart because protocol is to maintain anonymity, but the former vice president said there is a program that allows an intermediary to reach out to the donor family to see if they want contact with the recipient.

"At some point I would be, you know, certainly amenable to contact with the family. But we have not at this point exchanged any information," Cheney said.

If contact was made, Cheney said he would "express my gratitude for what's a magnificent gift. I can't think of a more magnificent gift than to be given additional years of life."

Healthy again, Cheney has resumed his love of fishing and his frank evaluations of politicians, including himself.

Cheney left office as one of the most unpopular vice presidents in the country's history, but the man known for his defiance of public opinion is vintage Cheney.

"I'm very comfortable with what I did, and why I did it, and how I did it," he said.

When asked if he had any regrets, Cheney replied, "Not really."

"You can't be judged, and shouldn't judge, people in those senior levels by the polls," he told ABC News.

He does not spare his fellow Republicans, calling Sen. John McCain's selection of Sarah Palin as his vice president running mate a "mistake."

Cheney said Palin had been governor of Alaska for two years at the time and "did not pass the test" of being ready to be president.

He also wryly described how the list of vice presidential candidates is used by officials up for reelection.

"I had a couple of calls from politicians who'd say, 'You know, it'd really help me in my race back home, Dick, if I was on the list.' Done. You're on the list," said Cheney. "Then somebody could go leak the fact that they were on the list."

Cheney helped vet candidates for Gerald Ford in 1976 and George W. Bush in 2006 that ultimately settled on Cheney.

"But that was the big list. It was easy to get on the big list. The tough part is the small list, the one that's really under active consideration," he said.

Cheney's harshest criticism, however, was for President Obama.

"I obviously am not a big fan of President Obama. I think he's been one of our weakest presidents. I just fundamentally disagree with him philosophically. I'd be hard put to find any Democratic president that I've disagreed with more," he said.

When asked if he thought Obama was "worse than Jimmy Carter," Cheney replied, "Yes."

Cheney gave Obama credited for killing al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, but added that "a lot of that intelligence that laid the groundwork for what ultimately led to the capture of Bin Laden [was] as a result of programs we had in place in the Bush administration."

He was sharply critical, however, of Obama's plans to withdraw troops from Iraq and Afghanistan.

"We should not be running for the exits. We should not be turning our backs on our friends in that part of the world," he said.

Granada Hill Charter High School's nine-member Academic Decathlon team is in Washington, D.C., taking a victory lap of sorts as a reward for winning its second national championship earlier this year.

Team members met this week with Education Secretary Arne Duncan and also have meetings scheduled with Dianne Feinstein and Barbara Boxer, who represent California in the U.S. Senate.

Granada Hills dominated the national competition, held in late April in Albuquerque, scoring the highest point tally in the decathlon's history. That score - 54,081 points out of a possible 60,000 - broke the previous record of 53,119 set by Ventura County's Moorpark High School in 2008.

East Jerusalem concert nixed after claims of 'normalisation'

The UN Middle East envoy announced on Wednesday the postponement of a concert planned for east Jerusalem, after Palestinian objections to the perceived act of "normalisation".

The West-East Divan Orchestra, co-founded by late Palestinian academic Edward Said and Israeli-Argentine maestro Daniel Barenboim, was to hold a July 31 concert on the Mount of Olives.

But Robert Serry said that the planned concert, which "the United Nations was happy to present", has been "postponed".

The statement issued by Serry's office said that "Noting the objections of some groups it was decided - with regret - not to proceed with present plans for the concert".

Such events, in which Palestinians and Israelis take part, are "a kind of normalisation, at the same time Palestinian rights continue to be ignored", as Rassem Ebidat, coordinator of the National and Civil Work Committee in east Jerusalem, told AFP.

"Instead of sponsoring a concert on the Mount of Olives, Serry should demand that Israel stop confiscating Palestinian lands and building settlements and bases on it," said Ebihat, whose group wrote Serry to protest the concert.

The committee also accused the orchestra of aiming at "building normalisation bridges without acknowledging the Palestinian people's right of self-determination and the right of return, and without the refusal of its (Israeli) members to serve in the Israeli army".

But to Serry, the concert would "have sent a strong message that Palestinians must be able to experience their cultural rights and freedoms in the unique city of Jerusalem, which the United Nations believes must emerge as the open capital of two states, living side by side in peace and security", his statement read.

"Mr. Serry is disappointed that the concert will not go ahead at this stage and that Palestinians in east Jerusalem will not have the opportunity to enjoy such a unique cultural offering in their city," it added.

AP Essay: Will anyone really miss the box office?

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? A Warner Bros. executive emailed a fact sheet about "The Dark Knight Rises" to Hollywood reporters a few days ago and ended with two hopeful syllables for the film's box-office prospects: "Ka ching."

Cash registers have indeed been ringing at theaters worldwide this weekend as millions shell out for the finale to Christopher Nolan's epic Batman trilogy. But the shootings that left 12 dead and 58 wounded at a "Dark Knight Rises" screening in Colorado on Friday have silenced the usual box-office crowing by studios to let the world know they've unleashed another blockbuster.

Warner, the studio behind the Batman flicks, decided to hold off on releasing debut numbers for "The Dark Knight Rises" this weekend out of respect to the shooting victims and their families. Other studios followed suit, saying that like Warner, they would not issue their usual Sunday estimates, waiting instead until Monday, when they normally release final dollar counts for the weekend.

It's an unusual show of harmony in a business where studios jostle and elbow one another for the right to proclaim in ads: "The No. 1 movie in America!"

There's no doubt that "The Dark Knight Rises" will be the No. 1 film in America and beyond. Before Warner opted against weekend box-office reporting, the studio announced that the film took in $30.6 million domestically from shows that started just after midnight Friday, including the one in Aurora, Colo., where a gunman opened fire on an audience eager to be among the first to see the film.

That was the second-best result ever for a midnight debut, trailing only Warner's "Harry Potter" finale with $43.5 million over the same weekend last summer. Trade papers Hollywood Reporter and Variety were projecting about $75 million for the film's full first day Friday, which could result in a three-day weekend haul of around $170 million, second only to last May's "The Avengers" at $207.4 million and ahead of the then-record $158.4 million for 2008's "The Dark Knight."

But Hollywood's radio silence on box office this weekend leaves a curious void. No top-10 list for movie fans to mull over. No studio executives sharing audience age and gender breakdowns. No analysts slicing and dicing the numbers to determine if overall business was better than the same weekend's a year ago. No one reducing movies to the simple thumbs-up, thumbs-down judgment of whether they made too much or too little money.

The question on this box-office-less weekend is: Will anyone really miss it?

Sure, people like lists and rankings. Publishing has its best-seller lists, music has its pop charts, TV has its Nielsen ratings.

Many movie fans have an idle curiosity to see how particular releases do, some holding off on deciding if they'll see a film until they know if it's a hit or a flop. Yet most people are either sold on seeing a film based on the marketing or they'll wait until trusted friends catch it and give it a recommendation or a raspberry.

For books and music, the rankings simply say what's selling the best, and Nielsen ratings provide context on what share of the overall audience a show grabs.

Hollywood box office is all about dollars, the numbers always climbing, the records always shooting higher. But box-office receipts provide only a narrow glimpse of show business.

A movie that hauls in $150 million might sound like a winner, but it may have cost twice that much to make and market, and studios have to share the receipts with theaters. Conversely, a movie might flop with $50 million domestically but do two or three times that much business overseas and manage at least to make back its money.

Inflation raises a bigger issue in gauging box-office records by cash alone. Publishing and music count success in terms of units sold, and some countries measure films the same way, by the number of tickets they sell.

Hollywood perpetually breaks box-office records largely because ticket prices keep going up. In 2002, "Spider-Man" did what had been unthinkable to box-office analysts, pulling in $114.8 million to become the first movie to top $100 million over opening weekend.

This summer, over the same May weekend 10 years later, "The Avengers" did today's equivalent of the unthinkable with the first $200 million debut.

Average ticket prices in 2002: $5.80, meaning about 20 million tickets sold for "Spider-Man" over opening weekend. Average ticket prices today: $7.83, meaning about 26 million tickets sold for "The Avengers" in its first weekend.

But the ticket price for "The Avengers" would average out quite a bit higher because much of its business came from 3-D screenings, which cost a few extra dollars. With today's market-saturation release pattern, "The Avengers" also played on far more screens than "Spider-Man" did.

Likewise, "The Dark Knight Rises" is playing only in 2-D, so it's a superhero flick probably destined to be less of a box-office spectacle than "Avengers" because no one's paying extra to watch it wearing, well, spectacles.

Inflation really makes a difference gauging all-time box-office sensations. "Avatar," ''Titanic," ''The Avengers" and other top-grossing modern movies have more cash in the bank but lag behind such older films as "Gone with the Wind," ''Star Wars" and "The Sound of Music" in terms of actual tickets sold.

Warner and other studios did the right thing in muzzling the box-office machine this weekend. Counting dollars is trivial in light of the tragedy in Colorado.

But then, is it any less trivial this weekend than the other 51 weekends of the year?

BREAKING: 14 Dead And Approximately 50 ... - Business Insider

Details are coming in about a horrific shooting in Aurora, Colorado.

A figure in a gas mask set off tear gas bombs about 15 minutes into a midnight showing of The Dark Knight before opening fire on the crowd watching the movie.

Local Police Chief Dan Oates told reporters at a press conference that 14 people have died and approximately 50 injured in the attack.

He also said the police has a suspect in custody after being apprehended in the parking lot.

"Right now we only know of one gunman, and we have no evidence of additional shooters," Oates said. He said that police remain "concerned" about that, although they have no evidence to support this. In the wake of the attack, police went to other theaters to ensure that this would be an isolated incident.

Oates also said that the shooter made statements about explosives at his apartment. That building has been evacuated as a precaution.

The perpetrator, allegedly dressed in a Dark Knight?costume, began shooting after blinding theater-goers with tear gas in Theater #9.?According to 9 News, victims in Theater #8 were also hit by bullets coming through the wall.?A witness?also told reporters on the scene that the shooter eventually entered other theaters after they had been evacuated, in an attempt to shoot stragglers as those rooms were evacuated.

The theater was not known as a particularly safe theater, according to witnesses interviewed by correspondents at 9 News. However, witnesses have repeatedly speculated that this "feels like" a terrorist attack in TV interviews, however the shooter's motives remain unknown.

Witnesses who were not injured were transported to Gateway High School.

Oates said police will hold another press conference around 11 AM local time.

UPDATE:?News 9 reports that the youngest victim reported by the local children's hospital is a six-year old. It's unclear if there are younger victims at other hospitals or if other victims' records are still being processed. 6 people are being treated at that children's hospital.

UPDATE II:?The suspect's car also had explosives, and reporters on the scene have been told to stay as far as possible from his house and apartment.

UPDATE III:?Willy Geist on MSNBC TV said that the suspect is a 24 year-old white male, citing Police Chief Oates.??NBC News tweets?that President Barack Obama has been notified of the shooting, and reporters on 9 News cited a statement released by the President in their live reports.

UPDATE IV:?The youngest victim identified by 9 News so far is a three-month old who is a patient at "University Hospital."

Syrians flee violent clashes in Damascus

Hundreds fled Damascus flashpoint districts on Thursday amid a surge of fighting following a bomb attack which killed three security chiefs, as residents reported shops closed and food shortages.

Major General Robert Mood, head of the UN monitoring mission, warned that Syria was not on track for peace and that the violence was spiralling, as President Bashar al-Assad appeared to have gone to ground.

The military gave residents 48 hours to leave areas where clashes are taking place between security forces and rebels pushing their "Damascus Volcano" offensive.

"These extremely violent clashes should continue in the next 48 hours to cleanse Damascus of terrorists by the time Ramadan begins" on Friday, a security source told AFP, referring to the Muslim holy fasting month.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights watchdog said that in the western district of Mazzeh alone, hundreds of people were on the move, "fearing a large-scale operation by regime troops."

Residents also fled the southern district of Tadamon and the Palestinian refugee camp Yarmuk, it said.

The situation "is worse than catastrophic," one Damascus resident told AFP. "People are fleeing from the shelling."

"The medical and humanitarian situation is getting worse," she said.

"Several of my neighbours have knocked on my door asking for bread, because most of the shops in the neighbourhood are closed."

Another said: "Shops, streets and universities are all closed. The smell of blood is filling Damascus."

On Wednesday a bombing in the city killed three top security officials, including the defence minister and Assad's brother-in-law.

"There is an escalation by the Syrian regime to avenge the operation that targeted the (security chiefs)," said Rami Abdel Rahman, head of the Britain-based Observatory.

"The rebels have also escalated to reap the fruits of the attack, and to try to finish off the battle" for Damascus, he added. "Clashes and shelling have engulfed Syria, and they are taking place day and night."

Syrian National Council spokesman George Sabra told AFP: "We see that what happened is a sign of the beginning of the end of the regime. It was a major blow to (Assad) and the regime's repressive security apparatus."

Assad's whereabouts are still not known and he has not commented on the bombing or appeared in public since the attack.

However, he was cited by state media as appointing Fahd al-Freij defence minister to replace Daoud Rajha, who was among those killed when the National Security headquarters was targeted.

State media have yet to distribute images of the aftermath, unlike on previous occasions involving attacks in the capital.

The deaths of Rajha, Assad's brother-in-law Assef Shawkat and General Hassan Turkmani, head of the regime's crisis cell, marked the first time in the 16-month revolt that Assad's inner circle has been targeted.

"The army has so far exercised restraint in its operations, but after the attack, it has decided to use all the weapons in its possession to finish the terrorists off," the security source said.

"The army has told residents to stay away from combat zones, as the terrorists are trying to use residents as human shields."

The Damascus blast came on one of the deadliest days in the conflict.

At least 214 people -- 124 civilians, 62 soldiers and 28 rebels died on Wednesday, the Observatory said. That figure did not include the three regime members.

"It pains me to say, but we are not on the track for peace in Syria, and the escalations we have witnessed in Damascus over the past few days is a testimony to that," General Mood, head of the UN Supervision Mission in Syria, said in a statement to reporters.

The deteriorating situation comes as the West and Russia and China prepare for a showdown later Thursday over a draft UN resolution calling for sanctions against Syria.

UN chief Ban Ki-moon and international envoy Kofi Annan called on the Security Council to take strong action, but Russia and China are expected to veto the resolution.

Ban said there was an "extreme urgency" for action to halt the violence which activists say has killed more than 17,000 people.

Annan, the UN-Arab League envoy, said the council must take "decisive" action after he persuaded the major powers to postpone the vote originally set for Wednesday.

"The deteriorating situation in Syria underscores the extreme urgency for all sides to stop armed violence in all its forms, implement the six-point plan and move swiftly towards a political dialogue," Ban said in a statement.

Annan "urged members of the Security Council to unite and take concerted and strong action that would help stem the bloodshed in Syria and build momentum for a political transition," said his spokesman Ahmad Fawzi.

Wednesday's attack also wounded Interior Minister Mohammed al-Shaar and General Hisham Ikhtiyar, head of National Security, and was claimed by the rebel Free Syrian Army as well as another group, the Brigade of Islam.

"The traitors, agents and mercenaries are deluding themselves if they think that Syria will bow to this strike, even if it hurts," the ruling party's mouthpiece, Al-Baath newspaper, said on Thursday.

Israeli Defence Minister Ehud Barak, touring the occupied Golan Heights, called the bombing "a severe blow" to Syria's alliance with Iran and Lebanon's Hezbollah.

And British Prime Minister David Cameron told reporters in Afghanistan: "It is time for transition in this regime... but if there isn't transition it's quite clear there is going to be civil war."

Bodies found in field in search for missing Mo. sisters

Updated at 4:50 a.m. ET: Authorities reportedly found the bodies of two women in a rural field in western Missouri on Sunday evening after interrogating a suspect over the disappearance of a young mother and her sister.

The Platte County sheriff's office said it could not immediately confirm the identities or causes of deaths of the women discovered near Trimble, Mo., which is about 30 miles from Kansas City, Mo.,?the Kansas City Star reported.

"We have one individual in custody and we believe that person accounts for all the individuals involved in the sisters' disappearance," the Star quoted?Capt. Erik Holland?of the sheriff?s office as saying.

Infant daughters left at home
Britny Haarup, 19, and her sister Ashley Key, 22, have been missing since Friday, when Haarup?s fianc?, Matt Meyers, found her two infant daughters alone at her home.

The sisters also left behind their purses and a cellphone,?NBC affiliate KSDK-St. Louis reported. A comforter soaked in blood was also found in the home, and relatives said guns were missing from the dwelling, the Star reported.

The women found in the field were Caucasian, Holland told the Star. "We can say we were led here based on information from a suspect in the disappearance of Britny Haarup and Ashley Key."

"That individual is under arrest and in custody," the newspaper quoted Holland as saying.

"We all had held out hope,? Cassie Meyers, Matt Meyers' sister-in-law, told the Star after the bodies were found. "We were hoping they'd just show up OK, or that they'd call someone. ? With this news, even if it isn?t yet confirmed, the hope?s not there."

Earlier, relatives said one of the women had been running with a "bad crowd," KSDK reported.

Britny Haarup "would never go off and leave her children," KSDK quoted Paul Haarup, Britny and Ashley's father, as saying. "So knowing the children were alone, there was something wrong."

The relationship between the suspect in custody and the sisters remained unclear.
